Amnesty: crackdown won't deter protesters in MENA

(18 Feb 2020) LEAD IN: In its annual report, Amnesty International documented the state of human rights in the Middle East and North Africa during 2019. STORY-LINE:   In a press conference held in Beirut, Amnesty International described the year of 2019 as "the year of defiance." Heba Morayef, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa regional director, accused the governments in the region of using excessive and lethal force against the peaceful protests that erupted in 2019. As for the displacement crisis in Syria, Amnesty recognized the displacement of more than 800,000 people from Idlib since December 2019. The report added that there were three million people relying on international humanitarian aid but that today that aid has stopped. The 76-page report shows how the governments and the authorities across the region arrested and prosecuted activists and protesters. In Iran alone, more than 300 people were killed in four days and thousand were wounded when Iranian security forces open live ammunition on protesters who were protesting against the increase of fuel prices said the report. Morayef added that, "thousands of people where exposed to enforced disappearance and torture." She concluded that governments should realize that protesters won't be deterred by the violence. "The governments of the region should realize that what they are doing in repressing the protests and the imprisonment of the peaceful critics and the defenders of human rights will not drop the voices demanding the rights, the economic, social and political rights because these are basic rights," she said.
