Dozens protest Mideast deal near US embassy

(21 Feb 2020) LEAD IN: Jordanians continue to protest against the White House plan aimed at ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. STORY-LINE: Dozens of Jordanians marched after Friday prayers towards the U.S. Embassy in Amman, protesting the U.S. president Donald Trump's plan aimed at ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Protesters chanted anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans and called on the Jordanian government to annul the peace treaty with Israel. The plan sides with Israel on key contentious issues and attaches nearly impossible conditions for granting the Palestinians their hoped-for state. Jordan is home to the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank and Gaza Strip. "Jordan today is united by one word, no for the deal of the century, no for any concession on our right for Jerusalem, holy sites, Al-Aqsa and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre," said Murad Adaileh, secretary general of the Islamic Action Front. Demonstrators also called on Arab leaders to take a firm stance against the White House plan, saying that such a plan will only lead to more tension and conflict in the region. The White House plan would create a Palestinian state in parts of the West Bank, but would allow Israel to annex its settlements in the occupied territory. It would allow the Palestinians to establish a capital on the outskirts of east Jerusalem but would leave most of the city under Israeli control. Jordan says it remained committed to a two-state solution based on Israel's pre-1967 lines. It also said it rejected any unilateral move by Israel, referring to the annexation plan. The reaction of Jordan, which would retain its responsibilities over Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque under the plan, is particularly significant. Protests also took place in different governorates across the Kingdom.
