Hundreds of women march in Baghdad
(13 Feb 2020) Hundreds of women marched on Thursday in Baghdad calling on the United Nations to support their protest against alleged corruption, discrimination, and gender-based segregation. The protesters urged other Iraqi women to join the protest and demanded the end of the current political system in Iraq and its ruling elite. There were other women demonstrations at the same time in Nasiriyah and Basra. At least 500 have since died under fire from Iraqi security forces who have used live rounds and tear gas to disperse crowds. "We have been chased by the brutal security forces, beating and killing us," said one protester. " They are killing our men and kidnapping our women, and they won't allow us to protest." Mass anti-government protests erupted on Oct. 1, when thousands of Iraqis took to the streets in Baghdad and the predominately Shiite provinces in southern Iraq to decry rampant government corruption, poor services and lack of employment.
