Samba school parades at Rio's Sambadrome
(24 Feb 2020) SAMBA SCHOOL PARADES AT RIO'S SAMBADROME Thousands of members of Mangueira Samba School took part in the parade at the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, (23 February 2020) with the theme of their performance centred on who Jesus Christ would be and how he would live nowadays in a poor neighbourhood in Brazil. The school presented various different versions of Jesus during its performance, including an indigenous Christ and a Christ born and raised in a favela where mostly low class people live. In addition to questioning the way the people see Jesus nowadays, Mangueira - one of the top samba schools of Rio - brought a message of tolerance to the Marquês de Sapucai Sambadrome through their performance. Like other schools, the Mangueira school used their performance to expose the daily problems faced by Brazilians, including religious intolerance, violence, racism and poverty. Sunday night is the first of the two nights where a total of 13 samba schools will compete in the championship of the world's most famous carnival. Each of the samba schools parades for about an hour and is judged in 10 categories, from the quality of the drum sections to the beauty of the costumes and floats.
