WHO: China says now 72,528 cases of COVID 19
(18 Feb 2020) China has reported 72,528 cases of COVID-19 to the World Health Organization, including 1,850 deaths, according a statement by the Director-General of the World Health Organization on Tuesday. In the past 24 hours China has reported 1,800 new cases, including both clinically and lab confirmed cases, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference in Geneva. Outside China there are now 804 cases in 24 countries and 3 deaths, Tedros added, explaining there are 92 cases in 12 countries outside China of human to human transmission. Tedros said there wasn't enough date on cases outside China to make a meaningful comparison on the severity of disease or the case fatality rate. But he stressed that WHO had not yet seen sustained local transmission "except in specific circumstances like the Diamond Princess cruise ship." Japan on Tuesday announced that 88 more cases of the virus were confirmed aboard the quarantined cruise ship bringing the total to 542 among the 3,700 initially on board. Tedros said Tuesday that diagnostic capabilities were improving in several countries and that by the end of the week, 40 countries in Africa and 29 in the Americas were due to have the ability to detect COVID-19. "Many of these countries have been sending samples to other countries for testing, waiting several days for results. Now they can do it themselves within 24 to 48 hours," he explained. The outbreak has caused massive disruptions and China may postpone its biggest political meeting of the year to avoid having people travel to Beijing while the virus is still spreading.
