WHO head updates on virus outbreak
(21 Feb 2020) China has reported a total of 75,567 cases of COVID-19 to the World Health Organization (WHO), including 2,239 deaths, the organization's director-general told a news conference in Geneva on Friday, detailing the latest figures on the epidemic. In the past 24 hours China has reported 892 new confirmed cases and 118 deaths, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus said, adding the significant decline in new confirmed cases was partly due to another change in how China is reporting its figures. Tedros added that WHO was concerned about an increase in cases reported in the Chinese province of Shandong. Outside China there are now 1,152 cases in 26 countries with a total of eight deaths. Tedros said that although the total number of cases outside China remained relatively small, the WHO was concerned about a number of cases without a clear epidemiological link such as travel history to China or contact with a confirmed case. Apart from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, the Republic of Korea now has the most cases outside China, Tedros said, expressing concern also for an increase in cases in Iran, where there are now 18 cases and four deaths in just the past two days.
