Abortion-rights advocates rally amid SCOTUS case
(4 Mar 2020) Abortion-rights advocates held signs in New Orleans Wednesday and cheered as they watched their counterparts rally in Washington as the U.S. Supreme Court was to hear oral arguments in a challenge to the constitutionality of a Louisiana law regulating abortion. In recent years, dozens of new restrictions have led to the closure of abortion clinics across Louisiana. Only three remain open in the state – in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport. Employees at the remaining clinics say they are fielding phone calls regularly from anxious pregnant women who call to ask if abortion is still legal and if the clinics are still open. They are open for now, and abortion remains legal in Louisiana and elsewhere in the United States, but Wednesday's Supreme Court case could lead to more clinic closures and, more fundamentally, a retreat from protecting the right to abortion that the Supreme Court first announced in 1973. The rally in New Orleans was originally scheduled to be held in a city park, but the threat of rain pushed the event indoors. It was held at Incubator Propeller, an office space for small businesses, nonprofits, freelancers and foundations. At least 200 people packed the space Wednesday, many holding signs as they watched the rally held simultaneously in Washington.
