Hillary: Russians trying to pick next US president

(24 Feb 2020) Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton believes "the Russians are continuing to try to choose our next president, like they chose our last president". Clinton was speaking at the Berlin International Film Festival on Monday when she was promoting "Hillary" - a documentary series about her life. Her statement came three days after US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said he was briefed by US officials "about a month ago" that Russia has been trying to help his campaign as part of Moscow's efforts to interfere in the 2020 presidential election. Sanders' response was a sharp contrast from that of US President Donald Trump, who has pushed back at the assessment of US intelligence agencies that Russia has interfered in elections on his behalf. Minutes before Sanders condemned Russian interference, Trump dismissed reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin was trying to help him as well as "a rumour" started by Democrats. Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 US presidential election, urged people to "pay attention to try and get the best possible information and don't believe everything you see on the internet. That is one of the greatest challenges facing democracy right now." She remained tight-lipped about who she favours in the ongoing Democratic primaries, saying she would leave that decision to the voters. "I just want to be sure that we can beat the current president, who I think has done a lot of damage to our country and the world, so I just want whoever it is nominated to be able to win. That's my goal," Clinton said. Directed by Nanette Burstein and premiering on March 6, "Hillary" interweaves biographical chapters about Clinton's life with behind-the-scenes footage from her presidential campaign. Burstein, who says she was surprised at how open and forthright Clinton was with her, is looking forward to seeing how a European audience views the documentary series.
