New York students protest India's citizenship law
(6 Mar 2020) People rallied on the Columbia University campus in New York on Thursday to denounce India's controversial citizenship law that triggered violence last month in Delhi. At least 46 people have died in the riots. The new Citizenship Amendment Bill allows Hindus, Christians and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion. It does not apply to Muslims. Columbia University student Conrad Noronha says that exclusion feels like a personal affront. "I'm a Christian minority and the violence has started against Muslim minorities, but it affects almost all minorities, progressive people across the across the country," Noronha said.
