The city has been named one of the most dangerous and economically distressed locations in all of North Carolina. In 2017, Suggs purchased a foreclosed house in East Kinston, a once thriving neighborhood that has diminished due to devastating hurricanes worsened by climate change, and the departure of factory jobs that once fueled the community.
