Youth activist Thunberg at Brussels climate march
(6 Mar 2020) Climate activist Greta Thunberg led thousands of people on a protest march through Brussels on Friday. According to the police, 3,400 people marched from the city centre to the European Union district. Thunberg was at the march at the invitation of several EU institutions. The march came two days after the European Commission presented its new Climate Law, proposing to make the 27-country bloc carbon-neutral by 2050. However, there is no plan to increase the bloc's overall emissions goal for 2030 and Thunberg condemned the project as insufficiently ambitious. "I am here today because Greta is here and we cannot let her be alone facing all those politicians, we have to be out in the streets and show that we all support her," said Antonia Mallach, from Germany, who participated in the march. Most of the demonstrators were young, but there were some older protesters as well. "We have grandchildren. For us it's too late, but our grandchildren will live with a different climate situation and in a different society. So we want to take part in this, that's really all we can do," said Alain Quoidbach, who came from Verviers, a Belgian city near the German border.
