Hundreds protest US Mideast plan in Amman
(14 Feb 2020) LEAD IN: Jordanians demonstrated Friday rejecting a White House plan aimed at ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Protesters also called on the Jordanian government to cancel its gas deal with Israel. STORY-LINE: Hundreds of Jordanians marched on the streets of the capital Amman after Friday's prayer, denouncing a U.S. peace plan to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The angry demonstrators held banners in support of Palestinians, chanting anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans. The demonstration was organized by the "Alliance to confront the Deal of the Century" as well as leftist and national parties. "We want to say that this deal (Trump's peace deal) will be sent to the trash bin of history, and this deal will not pass," said Abdel-Fatah al-Kilani, spokesperson of the alliance to confront the 'Deal of the Century': Protesters called on the Arab leaders to take a firm stance against Trump's deal, saying that such unfair and biased plan in favour of Israel will lead to lose the historical Palestine and will lead to more tension and conflicts in the region. Protesters also called on Jordan's king Abdullah II to cancel the gas deal with Israel. Demonstrators also called on the Jordanian government to annul the peace treaty with Israel, dismiss the Israeli ambassador in Amman and end all relations with Israel. Jordan backs a two-state solution, officials have said that any proposal that does not meet the constants of the Jordanian position will not be accepted. President Donald Trump's Mideast initiative heavily favours Israel and would allow it to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank. In return it would grant Palestinians limited autonomy in scattered enclaves surrounded by Israel, but only if they met nearly impossible conditions. The plan would allow the Palestinians to establish a capital on the outskirts of east Jerusalem but would leave most of the city under Israeli control. Jordan is home to a large Palestinian population. Jordan and Egypt are the only two Arab countries to have made peace with Israel.
