Turkish troops, rebels clash with Syrian govt forces

(14 Feb 2020) Turkish forces and Syrian rebel groups clashed with Syrian government forces on Friday in a continuing confrontation that saw the shooting down of a government helicopter, reports said. Video taken by the Associated Press showed Turkish and rebel rocket artillery firing west of Aleppo. Turkey has been backing rebel groups in northwestern Syria in their battle against a government offensive. Government forces, backed by Russia, are trying to wrest control of a crucial highway that links Aleppo to the cities of the south in the last area of the country still held by rebel fighters. Turkey has been deploying equipment and troops in the region in an attempt to halt the Syrian military's advances. But the increased Turkish footprint has also resulted in confrontations with Syrian troops, and clashes between the two sides have killed 13 Turkish military personnel and the same number of Syrian troops. The violence has displaced 800,000 people since the start of December, one of the largest single waves of displacement ever in such a short period.
