African American voters undecided in SCarolina

(24 Feb 2020) It's Sunday morning at Rock Grove AME Zion Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The congregation sings along as the choir sways. But the music isn't the only thing moving them back and forth these days. Less than a week remains before the South Carolina Democratic Primary and some voters are weighing their options. "It's important that we don't get fooled, or blindsided or misled by popularity. That we really examine the candidates truly to see what they represent for us and what they can do for us," Rev. Dr. Titus Thorne said. South Carolina is supposed to be a firewall and potential comeback for former US Vice President Joe Biden, who struggled in Iowa and New Hampshire. He has Janiah McCrorey's vote. "Some of the stuff he's doing I feel like it would help us a little better," she said. Biden has long said his message resonated with minority voters. "We're so different than an Iowa or New Hampshire or Nevada. Religion is a big motivator here. African Americans are 35 percent. Southern culture and values are different than in the Midwest and the north east. So I think it gives you a taste of what could happen in the rest of the south," Dr. Jeannie Haubert, Professor of Sociology at Winthrop University said. Biden, the once front-runner, is squaring off against billionaire Tom Steyer, who has invested heavily in South Carolina. According to a new Winthrop poll he's claimed the third spot behind Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders in the Palmetto State. "I feel like Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and some of the others, they're not out of step with the blacks in the south, but they're a little over the hill," voter Arthur Barber told AP.
