Archaeologists claim to have found shrine to Romulus
(21 Feb 2020) Archaeologists in Italy have unveiled an ancient shrine believed to have been dedicated to Romulus, the Roman king who according to legend founded Rome in the 8th century BC. Alfonsina Russo, the Colosseum Archaeological Park's Director, explained that the discovery is not a burial site, partly because Romulus' existance is disputed. The shrine was discovered beneath the Roman Forum, a rectangular area surrounded by the ruins of various ancient buildings of political significance in the Italian capital. Walking down into an excavated space beneath the Curia Julia, or ancient senate house, one will see what is believed to be a 2,600-year-old sarcophagus and a cylindrical block, which possibly served as an altar.
