Roger Waters campaigns for Assange release
(21 Feb 2020) Music legend Roger Waters is top billing on a march in support of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in London on Saturday, and will be joined by fellow celebrities Chrissie Hynde and Vivienne Westwood. Speaking on the eve of the march, the former Pink Floyd frontman said he supports Assange because he is "an innocent man." "He is banged up for no reason at all, except his publications are inconvenient to the powers that be," Waters added. Assange is being held at a British prison while fighting extradition to the United States on spying charges. His full court hearing is due to begin next week. When asked about his hopes for the rally, Waters said he wants to "get him (Assange) out of prison immediately," but also secure more media attention for his cause. "Thank goodness there are good people in this country who care about the law and who care about habeas corpus (legal principle to ensure detainees are not held unlawfully) and and are prepared to come tomorrow, walk down the Strand, walk down Whitehall and stand in Parliament Square for a bit," he said.
